While you do not have to sign-up to participate, providing your email will help. We only send a couple of emails a year including a reminder email in June and July plus occasional updates when research results are ready or stickers/merchandise is available. If you prefer not to sign-up, you will need to check back on this page for instructions or follow us on Instagram.

How it works

We are looking for as many individuals as possible to monitor your yard during the summer of 2021. Ideally, you will pick 2 different evenings in June and 2 different evenings in July to monitor your yard. If you cannot do that many or join the project late it is OK! This will take about 30 minutes each evening and you will need access to a smartphone connected to the internet.

This is a great project to do individually, in pairs, with children, or with a small group. In the next month, instructions for submitting your observations will be posted, along with a short 5-minute training video. Second, as part of this submission, there is an optional questionnaire with questions about the management of your yard. While this information is optional and we will keep the data anonymous, it is extremely helpful in helping us understand the habitat needs of fireflies. (For example, we might be able to recommend how much leaf litter to leave in your yard for fireflies or how frequently you should mow).
